Few people know that I spent much of my childhood growing up in a sleepy town of Keene, NH. My parents were missionaries and the family moved often, but I graduated both high school and later college (after transferring) in Keene. I never considered Keene my home because of the close or small mindedness of many of its citizens. I’m ashamed to say, it hasn’t changed much.
This past weekend, Keene’s annual Pumpkin Fest, an event that brings thousands of people from across the nation to New Hampshire, was marred in what’s being called a, “tragedy”. Unfortunately riots broke out multiple times over the course of the weekend, directly related to Keene State College students. All of a sudden, friends, family, and their peers have launched verbal attacks against these rioters. My opinion?
My dear Keene citizens, I’m sorry what happened at the Pumpkin Fest, but honestly, you never did anything stupid (seriously stupid) in your twenties? Perhaps you just didn’t have rampant social media documenting your idiocy. Also, remember the number of ignorant asses that flock to the area during this and like events. What happened this past weekend was bound to happen, no one should be surprised. Something like this should bring people together, not break us down. Learn from this people of Keene, NH — please.
